Dr. Javier Gulías is an Associate Professor at the Plant Production section of the Department of Biology (University of the Balearic Islands) since 2007. He began his scientific career studying the adaptation of Mediterranean sclerophyll shrubs to drought, paying special attention to the comparison between endemic and non-endemic species, finishing his PhD in this subject in 2004. Afterwards, he has participated in several projects devoted to the study of crops (like Grapevine and perennial grasses for forage and biomass production) and ornamental species to drought. He is now involved in the study of the causes and consequences of the tradeoff between productivity and desiccation tolerance in plants, as well as in the identification and selection of new species and varieties interesting in gardening, landscape and extensive agriculture in the Mediterranean area.
Dr. Gulíasteaches Plant Nursery, Turfgrass and Landscape and gardening in the Degree in ‘IngenieríaAgroalimentaria y del Medio Rural’ at the University of the Balearic Islands and he is the responsible of International Relations of this program. He is also the co-director of the Master degree in Applied Biotechnology and the secretary of the PhD program in Plant Biology under Mediterranean conditions, both at the UIB.
Dr. Gulias has leaded several projects of research and teaching cooperation with universities and research centers in Bolivia and Colombia (Herbario Nacional de Bolivia, UnidadAcadémicaCampesina de Tiahuanacu-Universidad Católica de Bolivia, Universidad de Nariño-Colombia).
